Chapter 13

It was a symphony of vomiting, an arrhythmic pulsing of sound. People on the ferry were fighting to hold anything down as the craft rose up in the air and slammed down again. It had started with all the adults making light of the situation and having a good time. Then it was just the children annoying the adults by enjoying the rocky ride. Then it was the children crying. And then, the smell of vomit mixed in the air with the water spray. The person sitting next to Gordon had clearly just eaten a curry, which added another level to the aroma.

Gordon had been able to hold down the queasy feeling. He knew he could fight it, and he did fight with all he had, something which a lot of the approximately two hundred people on the single deck obviously couldn’t do, almost all of whom were now throwing up. Gordon had wanted to not seem ostentatious, so he had decided that he would take the pleb mode of transport, as Kara had called it, from Taitung in Taiwan to Green Island.

It had taken the investigator some time to find Samantha’s location. It had taken cross-referencing her name with several available data, some phone calls, and finally discovering she had flown a connecting flight from Stockholm with another stopover before getting to Taiwan. He wondered why she had just suddenly vanished and why she went to Taiwan, but he eventually got information that she had a friend in Taiwan, so it made more sense.

Now that he knew where she was, what was he supposed to do with the information? Should he go in search of her? Why was he even thinking that? It was unbelievable that he would travel halfway around the world for a lady, but his heart told him otherwise. He had to find her; he had to see her again.

Kara took care of the itinerary and made the necessary reservations. He was going to Taiwan to find her, although he also threw in some business meetings in Beijing and Shanghai. He would find her, sort things out, have his meetings and find out more about the Chinese conglomerate that was gunning for his company—probably even have a meeting with them—then go back to Sammy and convince her to come back to Stockholm with him. He had it all planned in his head.

Samantha and Ella were enjoying their day, unaware of Gordon’s plan.

“I want to play with the dog. What’s its name, Mr. Fire Officer?” Ella was already striking up a conversation with a Fire Officer that had a dog with him.

Samantha patted Ella on the head, “I’m sure the fire officer is busy, Ella, darling. Let the man do his job.”

“Tā de míngzì Kāfēi gǒu.”

The mother and daughter looked at the man blankly.

“Café Go. He no live here.”

“Can I still touch him, Mommy?”

“Yes, dear. But don’t touch anything else until you’ve washed your hands. Always wash your hands, Ella. Remember that.”

The small, brown dog obviously no longer had the energy of a puppy but rolled around with Ella on the floor anyway.
